Windows 10 odrive system tray icon disappearing when I try to click on it

This used to work fine until about a week ago. When I try to go click on the odrive tray icon it disappears from the notification area. When I restart the app it will show up there and then disappear when I try to click on it.

I’ve tried to uninstall the program and reinstall with the latest exe which is version 5880 to no avail. I saw there was a similar topic opened back in April but it didn’t seem to have a resolution.

After reinstalling the app I’m unable to change the odrive sync directory (I moved it from my Windows drive user directory to a different drive). I think I need to access the right click context menu to change it, I don’t remember, so I’m unable to sync my folder with my Amazon cloud account any longer.

I should mention that the windows explorer right click menu seems to work okay. I actually was trying to sync my photos from the amazon cloud after reinstalling and it took me a moment to realize that it was downloading files to my windows drive and not the location I was using before.

I tried launching with a verbose log but it doesn’t show much

Any clues on what to try?

Hi @simon,
Can you run this command from a command prompt and let me know if it spits anything out when the tray icon disappears?

powershell -command "&{$bin=$(ls -Dir \"$HOME\.odrive\bin\" | sort Name -desc | select -f 1).FullName; Start-Process -NoNewWindow \"$($bin)\odriveapp.exe\";}"

Hi @Tony

Thanks for getting back to me.

I ran the provided command after killing the current running odriveapp.exe in the task manager. It launches odrive and I’m able to see the icon appear in the bottom right tray. I do not see anything in the command prompt output when I try to reach for the tray icon and it disappears when I hover over the icon.

Hi Simon,
When this happens, is odriveapp still running in the task manager? Does syncing still work?

Just in case, the odrive icon is not retreating to the ^ area of the taskbar, correct? It will do that a few seconds after launching on most systems, so I just wanted to double-check.

Hi Tony

Yeah it seems to me that the app is working as it should in the background. I just lose sight of the taskbar tray icon so I’m unable to control the app any longer.

When I start up the app it will show in the tray and then normally will hide itself in the notification area. But yeah in this case it just disappears when I try to hover over it and is not in that hidden area any longer. I also tried to go into the Windows 10 settings to keep odrive in the notification area but that doesn’t work either.

Thanks for the help,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Can you install our latest version to see if it makes any difference?

Hi Tony

Tried uninstalling and redownloading the .exe for the new 5914 release. I’m still having the same behavior. Wish I knew what changed in the past couple of days before this started happening.

Somewhat off topic but is there a way for me to specify what folder to sync to on my PC other than using the tray icon? That way I can at least get my photos directory syncing back with Amazon cloud again.

Thanks
Simon

Hi @simon,
There isn’t another way to move the odrive folder, unfortunately.

I am waiting to hear back from some folks on the team about this particular issue.

Hi Simon,
Got two more commands to try. Make sure that odriveapp.exe is still running (odrive is still working but has no tray menu) before trying this:

powershell -command "&{$bin=$(ls -Dir \"$HOME\.odrive\bin\" | sort Name -desc | select -f 1).FullName; Start-Process -NoNewWindow \"$($bin)\odrive.exe\";}"

After the UI disappears again, please run this one:
powershell -command "&{Get-WinEvent -LogName application | where { $_.message -match 'odrive.exe'};}"

Thanks!

Hi Tony unfortunately it doesn’t capture any event it looks like. Last one was from yesterday probably when I installed the latest version. Nothing from today 09/22/16

The first command does cause the tray icon to reappear but as soon as I go to try to mouse over it, it just disappears.

C:\Users\Simon>powershell -command "&{Get-WinEvent -LogName application | where { $_.message -match 'odrive.exe'};}"

If I uninstall the software does it leave any remnant files or cache I can look for to delete possibly?

Thanks again for your time and help,
Simon

Darn.

The uninstaller takes care of everything, so there won’t be any remnants to cleanup. The only thing it should leave behind is the odrive folder, but renamed as a backup.

We can try digging a deeper by triggering the tray icon to disappear and then looking through all of the recent event logs for something referencing “odrive”. Probably won’t turn up anything, but worth a shot.

powershell -command "&{Get-WinEvent -ListLog * -EA silentlycontinue | where-object { $_.recordcount -AND $_.lastwritetime -gt [datetime]::today} | Foreach-Object { get-winevent -LogName $_.logname -Maxevent 10 | where { $_.message -match 'odrive'} | Format-List};}" > "%userprofile%\Desktop\event_log.txt"

This will write out to a file called event_log.txt on your Desktop.

Hi Tony

Yeah unfortunately the text file is empty so it’s not logging anything there from when the tray icon disappears.

Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Unfortunately this one is a mystery for me at the moment.

I am curious if the issue if tied to your user, or if it is a system issue. Are you able to create a new user on that system to test with and see if the problem is reproducible with that new user account?

Thanks!

Hi Tony

I tried to create another user and logged in with it. It does happen with the other user as well. I’m stumped too as what could have changed because I’ve been using the app just fine for months. It seems to be the only tray app that is misbehaving as far as I can see.

Thanks,
Simon

Do you have any anti-virus or endpoint protection software running. There can sometimes be some strange interactions with this type of software, so its worth a shot to look at this as a possibility.

Yeah I tried disabling and uninstalling avira but I still get the same behavior unfortunately.

Hmm… how about firewalls? Anything along those lines installed, aside from the built-in Windows firewall?
Is this a personal computer? Any chance there are policies in place on that system that could interfere with local network traffic?

Hi Tony

Thanks again for your help with this much appreciated. I’m just using the built in windows firewall and don’t think anything occurred recently to cause any issues there.

This probably doesn’t help you guys out but I ended up doing a reset PC on Windows 10 to reinstall windows.
Once I did so and installed odrive, the tray icon seem to be working as intended. I guess as I install any additional software I’m using I’ll see if it occurs again and can pinpoint when something goes wrong.

Thanks,
Simon

Much appreciated @simon. It’s tough to bite that reinstall bullet, but I’m glad it worked out. Definitely let me know if it comes back.

Thanks!
