oDrive not downloading anymore

Suddenly I am not able to download (sync) any files from Amazon cloud drive.I was trying to download all folders, subfolders, and images (jpg, psd, etc), it was downloading without any issue (slow but it was). Suddenly nothing is downloading. Even if I try to download a single file, it doesn’t download anything. Please help, lot of time is wasted.

Another problem I have noticed with oDrive is that when you try to download root folder, and say download everything within, it would show as if everything is downloaded. But, it doesn’t download all. It missed many folders. Now, I have to go and find which folders were not downloaded. Such a pain.

Bulk downloading can definitely take a lot of time and attention, depending on how much data you need to download and which service you are downloading from.

If you have been downloading heavily, it may be that Amazon is throttling you. They impose fairly strict limits for Amazon Drive activity. It also seems like Amazon Drive has had a lot more activity, recently, with everyone trying to download their data, so things are slower and more error-prone than usual, and it already wasn’t the fastest/most robust around.

The odrive sync activity log will show what errors you are running into (see screenshots for where to find that).

If odrive hits too many errors or rate limits when downloading it will be forced to abort the process. If you are attempting to migrate off of Amazon Drive, I highly suggest taking a look at the article we have here that walks you, step-by-step, through the process of downloading everything in your remote storage:

Thank you for the prompt response. Yes, I do have lot of images (>5tb). I have been doing this download for few months already until recently when I realized that lot of folders were not downloaded. What a disappointment and now it is crawling slow.

I am trying to paste the sync activity log so that you can see what kind of errors and warnings I get. And, suggest if I am doing something wrong.

It doesn’t look like you are doing anything wrong. Amazon appears to be erroring on a number of downloads and the speed does seem quite slow.

I did a quick download test from Amazon and the speed wasn’t great, but it wasn’t too bad (~7MB/s), so it may be that something is throttling your speed (Amazon or your ISP, for example), or Amazon is more impacted in your particular region.

If you want to send a diagnostic, I can take closer look at things. What you are doing is fairly straight-forward, aside from the very large scale, so there really isn’t much that can be done to improve Amazon’s performance. We do have some advanced settings that allow for tweaking download concurrency, which can potentially provide some speed-up by allowing more files to be downloaded at once, but these settings aren’t available in the free odrive version.

Hi Tony, thank you. I realized upstairs Iw as getting slow speed compared to in basement where my router is. So, moved the setup in the basement to get better download speed.

The CloudDriveRateLimitingException indicates that Amazon is imposing a request rate limit on you, so they are rejecting your requests and returning an HTTP 429 Too Many Requests response.

Unfortunately you may just need to wait until they lift the limit.

Any idea Tony how long I have to wait before I start the sync again? Should I quit for sometime, before start or let it keep trying?

I made such a stupid mistake two days back, accidentally I formatted my drive instead of my SDCard. I have lost months of handwork. Now, I am downloading 5TB of data all again. So, time is critical.

Also, from the last e-mail that Amazon sent out to odrive users, it sounds like Amazon Drive data will continue to be accessible via Amazon Photos, so you may have more time than you think:

Amazon Drive will not be accessible after December 31, 2023.

While access to Amazon Drive will be removed, you can access all your backed up files through the Amazon Photos: Amazon Sign-In website. Both photo and video files can be accessed and managed with all Amazon Photos apps, while non-photo and non-video content can be viewed and managed on the Amazon Photos website or Desktop app.

That is definitely a positive thing to know.

I did see Folders option in Amazon Photos where I see the same structure of my folders as in Amazon Drive. Not sure how long that option will be available in Amazon Photos. I have lot of jpgs, raw files and photoshop files (my edits). that is what I want t backup the most. Not sure raw images (NEF) are treated as images or other files. Time will tell, but still I want to keep downloading till end of this year to be sure I have something to go back to in months to come. I will keep the sync on for tonight. If this doesn’t download any, then I will switch off for couple of days.

I have disabled the background scanning as I am only downloading. Let’s see if that helps.

Hi Tony, I have better luck downloading when I am closer to the modem. So, now the speed is better. But, I still have an issue where I want to control what folders I want to download. So, I did this:
Stop automatic sync
Disable background scanning

And, when I select one of the subfolders, first thing I noticed that it doesn’t show any placeholder files, secondly, when I right click → Sync. It doesn’t show up any files in the folder. I checked the web, and all the files exist, The filename is in this format DSC_0018.JPG. Actually, the entire root folder (2011) is just showing all my subfolders (date wise folders) but with no content. It is not consistent as other root folders (2010, 2012) has sub folders and the files.

I tried to quit oDrive and tried again, no luck. I noticed that the waiting shows (200+) but not sure why and how. I quit to clean that up, but again on restart it comes back. Could that be from automatic run? If so, how to make sure there is no waiting list, but only things it process it what I ask oDrive to sync local?

You need to enable automatic sync. Only disable background scanning.

I don’t understand this part. By default odrive will only sync what you tell it to, unless you have setup rules to do otherwise. Can you clarify what you are seeing when you have automatic sync enabled that you don’t want to happen?

Every day oDrive tray menu freezes, I can’t click on it and I have to restart my laptop. Once I restart, I go and disable the background scanning, and check if my 2011 folder from last night has downloaded all the pictures, but I see nothing. And, it same for other folders as well. 2005-2010 has worked well.

I have again started the sync on 2011 folder with subfolder option. But, this time I don’t see a percentage completion under Syncing Changes menu. When download was working for other folders, it used to show that which made me confident the sync is working. But, not anymore.

And, I don’t see any placeholder files either in the folders which it is there in online. In previous message I meant that how to make sure what I ask oDrive to download, that is what is downloaded and not everything from my main root folder. Meaning, it should not sync all by default. Please let me also know why don’t I see placeholder files in my folders?

Thanks for sending that!

What you are seeing is the behavior that is applied when performing a recursive sync and too many exceptions are encountered.

The sync engine will attempt the bulk download operation 3 times. If there are errors encountered all three times, which will disrupt the download operation, it will make a final pass that sets a temporary download rule on a folder, “resets” the placeholder files that where unable to be downloaded, and schedules a follow-up operation to scan and download that folder again, at a later time. This allows the sync engine to continue retrying these downloads, automatically, on the initial scheduled scan and then on subsequent periodic background scans (if background scanning is enabled).

The caveat to this method is that the placeholder files that have been “reset” won’t be shown in Finder. Instead the sync engine will direct-download the files when it gets to them (bypassing placeholder creation). This means that the files will just appear, as soon as they are fully downloaded.

I know this is a little confusing, but essentially it just means that you will need to be patient as odrive does its thing. Once odrive is idle, and not doing any more work, then you can take a look at how things appear and we can determine if any other steps are needed. Right now odrive is very busy.

I think what will help a lot is to tail the sync activity log, so that you can see exactly what is going on, in real time. You don’t need to be concerned unless odrive is no longer doing anything and you still are not seeing the files you expect.

To tail the logs, run this command in a Terminal session:

  1. Open a terminal session (type “terminal” in Spotlight search):

  1. Run the following command in the terminal session (copy & paste the line below into terminal + Enter):
    tail -F ~/.odrive/log/main.log

This will show you everything that odrive is doing, as it is doing it.

I really appreciate Tony that you take time to respond in detail. This information is really helpful. I must say that overnight I see that all folders selected for download does complete and the folders start showing up the images as you mentioned above.

I am only concerned about the fact that after all the sync is complete I don’t miss any data from the subfolders. You have seen I almost have daily subfolders per year. It will be hard to find how many folders are still not downloaded or is empty. I hope you understand. But, I will wait for the current download to complete and then check.
