Google Drive, many folders just missing

I’m not sure what information is relevant, but basically, after running a sync on the top-level google drive directory the resulting files and folders on disk are missing many folders and files. There’s no indication of failed syncing or of a folder to be synced that hasn’t been-- it’s just not there in many cases.

What information is relevant here, how should I debug this?

In most cases this is caused by the files/folders having characters that cannot be used on the local operating system. Take a look at this post for more details and see if this might be the case for you:

UPDATE: We have released a new version that will convert the illegal characters into legal equivalents while still trying to maintain similarity to the original characters. Missing file and folders should be rarely seen after updating.
