ACROBAT
When I combine my files on the Odrive via Acrobat, the screen that pops up showing me which files will be combined, its changing the names of the files, to something unintelligible. For this reason, I can’t re-organize the files, because I don’t know which files go where, now. When I bring these same files to the S: drive on my computer, I can clearly see all the file names in the pop up window on Acrobat.
I have the latest version of Odrive, which I just updated today and re-started my computer, before testing this out again.
My Odrive is properly sync’d. None of the files are cloud files. They’re pdfs.
Please tell me where I can upload an image of this issue.
Hi @giannetti,
Can you provide an example or screenshot of what you are seeing?
Once the files are synced, odrive doesn’t play a part in accessing them. All access is through standard Windows filesystem actions.
Off the top of my head I would guess that Adobe could be representing the files in an 8.3 format, if they are located in very long paths. The paths and file names would then be shortened and have a ~1 at the end, like this:
C:\DOCUME~1\PROJEC~1\VERYLO~1.TXT
I didn’t have an issue with any of the earlier files from a week ago when I combined files via Acrobat within the Odrive.
My Acrobat is up-to-date.
Thanks for taking a look at my screenshot.
I have no idea which files these are on the left, now that their file name is scrambled.

This occurred when combining the contract attachment files in the attached picture on the Odrive today. This prevents me from accurately re-organizing the pdfs in the correct order when in Acrobat (before combining them into a single pdf). Without an accurate file name, I can’t tell if they need to be moved up or down.
Hi @giannetti,
I believe this is Adobe’s behavior when dealing with paths that are longer than 260 characters. odrive fully supports longer paths, but I know that Adobe has historically had issues with it. My guess is this is how they are trying to deal with long paths, by converting them into the Windows 8.3 naming convention format.
To clarify, this is not an odrive issue, but an Adobe issue. If you reduce the path length to under 260 characters, total, you should no longer see this. For example, shorten the files names where you are seeing this. It looks like the “…Current Drawing List” file is coming in under the character limit, so you can try reducing the files with longer names to something equivalent or smaller in number of characters.
I also recommend reaching out to Adobe to see if they are planning to provide full path preservation support for paths over 260 characters.
Thank you. I did a test yesterday and my character limit (including spaces) is over 260 characters. My file names are really short, already. But the file path to get to the folder is much longer with the new cloud-based system that we’re working on.
Will shorten the files names later today and test this out.
Hi Gina,
Some folks use the “sync to odrive” feature as a way to combat long paths. Attached is a best practices guide for odrive and Procore that goes over this on page 11.
